Ask yourself the following five key questions and read about some practical tips for planning and living an amazing retirement:
1. Am I ready to retire?
Some people who are eligible for retirement prefer to keep working. It may be because they need the money, but often it’s because they like their jobs and the people they work with. So, carefully consider whether you’re really ready to give it up — not only the work itself, but also the social benefits of your workplace.
2. What will I do when I retire?
Retirement can last a long time, so before you retire, decide what you want to do in the years ahead. Choose something that matches your interests, talents and experience. It could be teaching at the community college, coaching a sports team or volunteering at the local food bank. Activities like these will give you personal satisfaction, and they will help you create some close connections to other people — an important factor for any happy retirement.
3. How will retirement change my life?
You will discover that retirement is the doorway to a new stage of your life, one where you control your time and your activities. Want to start tackling your bucket list? You can do it! Want to go visit the grandchildren for a week? You’ve got the time! Want to learn to play the piano or speak French? Go right ahead.
4. How is my health?
Health and wellness can play a big role when deciding to retire. It is important to incorporate healthy living plans into your retirement plan. For most people, we look forward to retirement because it’s supposed to be the best years of our lives. Without your health, it’s hard to imagine a fun, busy, active and independent lifestyle. If you want to be more in control of your retirement, be sure to plan ahead and work on your health.
5. Can I afford to retire?
Review your finances. Add up your estimated monthly income from any pensions, savings and investments. Then add up your estimated monthly expenses. If your expenses are greater than your income, you may have to work for a few more years, or you may want to consider a part-time job or an alternative way to supplement your income.
